How It Works
Fable's AI starts each session with a warm, context-aware question based on what the storyteller has already shared. It listens to their response, transcribes it in real time, and then generates a natural follow-up — the same move a skilled human interviewer would make. Unlike apps that send a weekly list of pre-written prompts, Fable's AI adapts to what the storyteller actually says. It builds a contextual model over time.
That's exactly what Fable solves. The most common reason people don't capture family stories is the blank-page problem: they don't know where to start. Fable always starts the conversation. Your loved one doesn't need to prepare anything. They open the app and the AI asks a question. They just respond. If they trail off or say "I don't know," the AI gently redirects — offering a simpler question or a different angle. Nobody gets stuck.
Storytellers can mark topics they'd prefer to avoid — subjects that feel too personal, too painful, or simply not relevant to their story. Fable will respect those preferences and steer clear. Fable doesn't currently allow fully custom question lists — the AI generates and adapts questions based on context. This is by design: the best interviewers respond to what they hear, not a pre-set script. [VERIFY — confirm exact customization capabilities before launch]
Sessions can be as short as 5 minutes or as long as the storyteller wants. There's no set length. For most users, sessions tend to run 10–20 minutes — about the length of a phone call with a grandchild. [VERIFY — confirm typical session length data when available]
We've worked hard to make the AI feel warm, conversational, and genuinely curious — not like a chatbot running through a checklist. That said, it is an AI. It doesn't replace the experience of a real conversation with someone who loves you. What it does do — reliably, patiently, and any time of day — is ask the questions that make a person feel truly heard.
Each Fable account is designed for one primary storyteller. This keeps the AI's contextual model clean and accurate. Family sharing lets multiple family members listen to and access the same stories — but the storytelling itself is one person per account. [VERIFY — confirm account structure before launch]
Privacy & Security
Stories, audio clips, and transcripts are stored in encrypted cloud storage. [VERIFY — confirm hosting provider and data residency details before publishing]
Only the account holder and the family members they explicitly invite can access stories. Fable does not have access to your stories for any purpose beyond operating the service. Stories are private by default. You control exactly who can listen.
Yes. All data — audio, transcripts, personal information — is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. [VERIFY — confirm exact encryption standards with engineering before publishing]
No. Full stop. Fable does not sell, license, rent, or share your personal data or story content with any third party for any commercial purpose. We do not use your stories to train AI models. We do not share data with advertisers. Your stories are your family's. Not ours.
Yes. You can export all your audio clips and transcripts from within the app at any time. Your data is yours — not locked in Fable's platform. If you cancel your account, you'll be given a window to download everything before it's removed. [VERIFY — confirm data export functionality and retention window]
Pricing & Plans
The free trial gives you full access to Fable — the AI interviewer, voice clips, transcripts, story organization, and family sharing. Your first 3 stories are completely free. No credit card required. No hidden limits on the trial. Just the real Fable experience.
Yes. Cancel from inside the app or by emailing support@fable.fyi. No cancellation fees, no hassle. [VERIFY — confirm refund policy for mid-cycle annual cancellation before launch]
Your recipient will receive advance notice before their gift year expires. At that point, they can choose to continue with their own paid subscription — we won't charge the original gift buyer. Their stories remain fully accessible regardless of whether they renew. [VERIFY — confirm gift-to-paid handoff and story retention policy]
We don't currently offer category discounts, but our free trial means anyone can start without cost. Annual pricing brings the cost down significantly. [VERIFY — confirm discount policy before launch]
Each account supports one primary storyteller, with unlimited family members able to listen to and access their stories. If you have multiple family members who want to be interviewed, each would need their own account. We're exploring family bundle pricing for the future. [VERIFY — confirm family plan availability or roadmap]
Technical Requirements
Fable is available on iOS (iPhone) and Android. You'll need a smartphone with a working microphone and a stable internet connection for voice sessions. No desktop app or browser version exists at launch. [VERIFY — confirm launch device support before publishing]
No. Fable is specifically designed for people who aren't tech-savvy. The experience is voice-first — you open the app and speak. There's no typing, no filling out profiles, no tutorials to complete. If you can answer a phone call, you can use Fable. For elderly users who need help getting set up: a family member can help set up the account, and then step back. The ongoing experience is entirely self-guided.
Fable requires an internet connection for sessions — the AI needs to be online to listen, transcribe, and respond in real time. [VERIFY — confirm offline behavior with engineering]
Yes. Family sharing lets you invite family members to listen to and access the story library. Each person gets view access — they can play audio clips, read transcripts, and search the archive. Only the account holder (the storyteller) conducts interviews.
After Someone Passes
Account delegation is one of Fable's most important features — and one no other app in this space offers. Here's how it works: The account holder designates a trusted family member as their "story steward." When the account holder passes away, the designated steward can take over management of the account — accessing, listening to, sharing, and preserving the stories. This means the archive doesn't disappear. The family doesn't lose access. The stories outlive the person who told them. [VERIFY — confirm account delegation setup flow and steward permissions before publishing]
If account delegation has been set up, the designated family steward takes over the account. The stories remain fully accessible to them and to anyone in the family sharing group. If no account delegation was set up: contact support@fable.fyi. We'll work with the family to ensure stories are preserved and accessible. [VERIFY — confirm post-death account policy and retention timeline before publishing]
Yes — that's exactly what account delegation enables. The steward gets management access to the account: they can listen to all stories, invite other family members, download the archive, and continue the account if they wish. They cannot conduct new AI interviews in the original account holder's name — Fable doesn't generate or fabricate responses from people who have passed. The archive is a real record of real conversations.
Yes — many families use their Fable archive this way. The story library is organized and searchable, making it easy to find specific clips — a favorite story, a piece of advice, the way they laughed at the end of a particular memory. Clips can be downloaded and played at memorial services, shared in family group chats, or included in tributes and obituaries.
